Absinthe Comeback – Longshot Magazine

I submitted the following photo essay to Issue #1 of Longshot Magazine. Though it didn’t make it to the final magazine, it was fun to do – the staff at Great Lake Distillery was super helpful and let me run around the place before they opened.

Absinthe – Comeback – Images by Derek Dysart

Thought to contain psychoactive compounds, production of absinthe was banned in 1919, and production of it was illegal until 2007 when the ban was lifted. Though absinthe does contain the compound Thujone, studies showed that the levels found in the infused spirit are low enough to have no effects on humans, thus leading the way for its production. On a technical level, absinthe is a distilled spirit that is infused with the botancials, fennel, anise, and absinthum wormwood, the final lending to the name. As a high proof concentrate (typically 55-72% alcohol), it is meant to be served diluted, it is then the essential oils of the botanicals come out of solution and given absinthe its strong nose and flavor.

The premise behind Longshot magazine is to create it in 48 hours. A theme is announced and submissions are taken for 24 hours. Then editors layout and edit the magazine for another 48 hours.

Season’s Greetings

Many of my customers use the photos I take of their families in their Holiday cards. My family is no exception.

The cover photo was taken at a breakfast with Santa where the kids got their hands painted. Afterwards they wanted to compare what each other got and I captured this spontaneous moment. The card design itself from from Tiny Prints, who I’ve used for holiday cards for a number of years now. They have the best designs, and very reasonable printing charges. I may offer custom cards in the future, but it does highlight one advantage of my digital packages – you are free to use your photos with the printing service of your choice.

Ironing out the kinks

Still plenty of kinks to iron out on the site, including getting the PhotoShelter integration to look a bit more seemless, but so far I’m extremely happy with the WordPress theme I’m using from Graph Paper Press.

Linnea

I had the good fortune of shooting some newborn portraits of two week old Linnea. Fully expecting to get only “sleeping baby” shots, Linnea was awake and happy for the whole session.

The New Site

By the time you are reading this, hopefully the paint is dry and everything is in place with the new site. I’m still running things on WordPress, but I really didn’t like the look of the old site. I don’t think it featured my photography all that well, and I’ve been using Photoshleter more and more for things like client review galleries, so I wanted something that worked better with that.

I’m sure there is bound to be some issues, but I’ll iron them out. Thanks for putting up with the “this site is under maintenance” page for so long. Hopefully now I can get to posting more photos.

Pfister Grand Re-Opening of Blu

The Blu lounge a top the Pfister Hotel has always offered stunning views of the City of Milwaukee. The folks at the Pfister were excited to re-open after a renovation as the first tavern in the state of Wisconsin to convert to 100% smoke-free ahead of the statewide mandate. I covered the gala event with the Cancer Society, as well as got some environmental shots to use in promotional materials.
